Porto is a granite river city of steep lanes, port lodges across the water, and Atlantic weather that makes even the laundry look considered. The Douro is the street; the life is a francesinha, a tile façade, and a sunset that belongs to the Gaia side.

Visit Porto when you want Portugal’s northern river city rather than Lisbon’s estuary hills. It is smaller, wetter, and more wine-lodge than miradouro-hopping — a place that rewards a slow crossing of the bridge.
