Cologne
Cathedral-shadowed, Kölsch-small-glass, and more carnival than haute
The City in One Minute
Cologne is a Rhine city of a cathedral that survived when much else did not, of Kölsch in small glasses, and of a carnival that takes the streets. The river is working water; the Altstadt was rebuilt with a sense of humour.
Why Visit?
Visit Cologne when you want friendlier river-beer than Düsseldorf’s polish. The cathedral is the axis; a brewery hall, a Rhine walk, and carnival (if you hit the season) do the rest.
City Personality

Best For
- Cathedral and Rhine walkers
- Beer-hall people
- Carnival timing

How Long Should You Stay?
2–3 days
Before You Go
- A VRS ticket covers trams and trains. The centre is compact; the cathedral is the landmark you cannot lose.
- Kölsch is served in 0.2L glasses and refilled until you cover the coaster. That is the custom.
- Carnival (Feb/Mar) books the city out. Come then on purpose or avoid it on purpose.
Good to Know
The unobvious notes are still being collected
This is where late-discovered context will live — the things travelers usually learn too late.
