Athens is a noisy, dusty capital where a temple still sits on a rock above the traffic. The Acropolis is unavoidable; the city is a sidewalk chair, a late tomato salad, and a neighborhood that cooled off when the islands got famous.

Visit Athens for the origin myth that is still a living, imperfect metropolis. Rome has more layers in the streets; this has the light, the hill, and a food culture that is simpler and later than the ruins imply.
